American Sailor

Bert Elmer Smith Jr. was born on 14 November of 1920 in Newport,Ky.
His parents were Bert Elmer Smith Sr. (1890-1959) and Sarah Jane Stevens (1897-1961)
In april 1940 he enlisted in the United States Navy.
During World War II he served onboard 2 Naval Vessels.

On March 28, 1944 he Married Ethel Jean Kyle.(1929- )

From 1945 to 1958 they had eight children.

In 1946 he re-enlisted in the Navy and served onboard
USS MINDORO CVE-120 and USS CORAL SEA CV-43.
He was then assigned to Service School Command in Great Lakes, Ill
were he was one of the first instructors at
Boilerman and Machinist Mate Class "A" Schools.
During this time he was Commissioned a Chief Warrant Officer.
After leaving Great Lakes,Ill he served onboard
USS BOTTINEAU APA-235 and USS CADMUS AR-14.
He was then assigned to Naval Recruiting Station Cincinnati,Ohio until
his retirement from the U S Navy.

After he retired from the Navy in 1960 he worked for the
US Postal Service until his death on 16 January 1974.
